South Champs 2026 – Hawks Make It Happen
It’s been a busy week at Hawks! With Peckham BMX Club unfortunately unable to host South Champs, the event was looking like it might have to be cancelled. With just five days to go, Hawks stepped in to make sure the riders still got their day of racing.
There was plenty to get sorted in a very short space of time. Volunteers had to be organised, the track needed preparing and all the work behind the scenes had to come together. Our in-house catering team also had a big job on their hands, getting ready to feed hundreds of riders and their families.
Then came another last minute change. DC Cycles unfortunately couldn’t make the event, leaving us searching for someone to provide bike support on the day. Thankfully, Chain Therapy stepped in and offered their services. A massive thank you to them for helping us out at such short notice!
Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, the track was ready and racing could go ahead.
The day got off to a good start before a damaged cable caused a problem with the timing system. The team worked hard to get it sorted as quickly as possible, so thank you to everyone for bearing with us. Soon enough, the motos were flying again, just like the riders coming off the Himalayas!
We welcomed an incredible 299 riders, with 34 of our own representing Hawks. It was great to see so many clubs and families joining us after such a late change of venue.
There was plenty to cheer about for Hawks, with four riders winning their categories and taking home the 1S plate. We also had four second places and five thirds, giving us 13 podium finishes across the day.
Here’s how our 34 riders finished:
4 × 1st place
4 × 2nd place
5 × 3rd place
3 × 4th place
4 × 5th place
1 × 6th place
1 × 7th place
4 × 9th place
1 × 10th place
1 × 11th place
2 × 13th place
1 × 14th place
1 × 16th place
1 × 17th place
1 × 19th place
Congratulations to all our riders. Whether you came away with a plate or were hoping for a better result, we’re proud to have you representing Hawks.
A special mention goes to Anita Wong, who has been voted South Region Female Rider of the Year! Anita has put in plenty of hard work training and racing, both here in the UK and over in Australia for the Worlds. It’s lovely to see her efforts recognised by the BMX community. Well done, Anita a well deserved award!
A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help, both during the week and on race day. From getting the track ready and keeping everyone fed to running the racing and clearing up afterwards, there was a lot of work that people won’t have seen. We couldn’t have done it without you.
And thank you to all the riders, families and clubs who came along and supported the event. It was a big ask with only five days to prepare, but we’re so pleased we could host South Champs and see everyone out there racing.
Hopefully everyone has had a chance to put their feet up, you’ve earned it! But there’s not long to rest, as in just a couple of weeks we’ll be hosting the third and final round of our club race series, followed by a BBQ and presentations. We can’t wait to see you all back at the track!
Come on, Hawks! 🔴⚫
